The Learning Factory provides access and training for a number of tools and skills. Some equipment, such as the mills and welding booths, are only available to those that have completed specific certification courses. These can be scheduled online through the Learning Factory Booking Page.

Machining

Machining resources within the Learning Factory include the manual mills, lathes, drill press, band saw, belt sander, pedestal grinder, hydraulic press, and cut-off saw. Machining certification requires that a student have knowledge of the safe and effective operation of these units. To obtain Machining I certification, a student must complete a Learning Factory machining course and demonstrate proficiency to a Learning Factory representative. Having received certification, a student will be permitted to use the machining resources. Also note that machining resources may not be operated without the presence of a Learning Factory representative in the shop area.

Metal Shop - Basic

This training grants access to 001 EDI. It covers:

  • general metal fabrication tools
  • sheet metal equipment
  • bandsaws
  • abrasive equipment

Metal Shop - Lathes

This training grants access to the lathe machines in 001 EDI.

Metal Shop - Mills

This training grants access to the milling machines in 001 EDI.

To gain access to this equipment, you must complete a training course and demonstrate proficiency to a Learning Factory representative. Schedule your training on the LF Bookings Page.

Metal Shop - CNC Mills and Lathes

This training grants access to the CNC capabilities of the mills and lathes in 001 EDI.

Mill and Lathe trainings are required before booking this training.

Metal Shop - Welding

This training grants access to the welding equipment in 001 EDI Building.  Welding resources within the shop include MIG welder and TIG welder. Welding certification requires that a student have completed Machining training and have knowledge of the safe and effective operation of these units. To obtain Welding certification, a student must complete a Learning Factory welding course. Having received certification, a student will be permitted to use the welding resources. Note that welding resources may not be operated without the presence of a Learning Factory representative in the shop area.

Woodshop

This training grants access to 115 and 116 EDI. It covers:

  • joiner
  • planar
  • drill press
  • bandsaw
  • CNC router
  • shaper
  • table saw
  • miter saw
  • vertical panel saw
  • accommodating makerspace

Additive - Basic 1

This training allows you to use Prusa 3D Printers (PLA only) in Fab Lab South (419 EDI) 1for long duration prints with no continuous monitoring.

Additive - Basic II

This training provides access to 108 EDI. It covers:

  • Multi-material Prusa 3D Printers

Additive - Advanced

This training grants access to 108A EDI. It covers:

  • Markforged Metal X
  • Markforged X7 (Carbon Fiber)
  • J55 Resin Printer

Makerspace - 2nd and 3rd Floor of EDI Building

This training grants access to 227 and 301 EDI. These spaces are primarily for use by SEDI classes and Capstone projects. It covers:

  • Prusa 3D printers (PLA Only)
  • soldering irons
  • prototyping materials and tools

Fab North - Textiles

This training provides access to the equipment in 402 EDI. It covers:

  • embroidery machines
  • sewing machines
  • dye sublimation printer
  • vinyl printer / cutter

Composites

This training grants access to 006 EDI. It covers:

  • composite layup equipment
  • composite sanding equipment

EE and IoT

This training grants access to 101 EDI. It covers:

  • advanced soldering equipment
  • oscilloscopes
  • multimeters
  • other electronics
